If you are a straight bowler, you already know that having the right ball can be a real game changer. A good ball can ensure that you’ll get a strike or a spare every time you bowl. While a bad ball can mean the difference between a spare and a strike.

If you are used to playing with cheap balls, you should seriously consider taking the leap to something higher quality. Cheap balls often fracture using the same approach, and regardless of how straight it is, it would not be appropriate to use it in a game.

Here we've reviewed our top 6 bowling balls for straight bowlers to make your decision easier.

This is my personal favorite from the Storm lineup. The Storm Ice Blue, Storm White, and Storm Red are all high-quality bowling balls that offer incredible value for your money. You won’t be disappointed by the speed and performance offered by this ball, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro.

All three balls come in a classic red and blue color scheme and have a modern white/silver Storm logo on the surface. This makes keeping track of your ball a breeze – a major plus when the lanes get crowded.

They feature a solid built – not too heavy, not too light. The ideal weight level for a newbie is between 15 and 16 lbs, and this ball falls just in that range, weighing in at 15.4 lbs.

  • Great for straight bowlers.
  • Smooth balanced back end motion.
  • Great ball roll after the release.
  • Unique urethane material.

  • Price could be a factor for some.
  • Not ideal for lanes with heavy volumes of oil.

The Roto Grip Own It Red bowling ball is our top pick for straight bowlers. This ball delivers a great back end motion with a strong hook, which is just what you need if you're a straight bowler.

This high performance ball features a unique urethane coverstock, which grips the lane in the middle and late phases of the lane. When you finally through this thing, it creates a large disturbance on the lane, hence, creating a greater hook on the backend of the lane.

This ball uses a 2000 Abralon medium finishing surface and the urethane material really performs exceptionally well in oily lanes. Obviously, that makes it the perfect ball for straight bowlers.

The Globe Viz-A-Ball is a bowling ball that can be used for straight or hook shots. It is a little more mature than the Shocker due to its solid coverstock, but the ball comes with its own set of unique characteristics that make it a complete package.

The Viz-A-Ball is made from the Most Advanced Composite Technology (MACT) that improves the newly designed core and coverstock of the ball. The ball uses a new formula of reactive polymers that create a ball with zero bowling friction. The coverstock is made from carbon fiber and fills each lane with an angular path.

The Viz-A-Ball is the first ball that is designed for enhanced angular rolling motions. It is more versatile that other balls on the market, which makes it a go-to bowling ball for many straight bowlers.

The Hammer Bowling Products Black Widow Bowling Ball is a must buy for ball enthusiasts. It is especially great for people who bowl naturally with the palm up technique as it can be quite hard to get the ball to hook. The spherically-shaped core of the ball improves the ball’s center of gravity around the pin. This makes it easier to take the ball straight to the pocket.

The weight of the ball is between 15lbs all the way to the 17lb mark. The 15lb ball is tuned to have an RG of 2.448 and a differential of 0.056. The 16lb ball has an RG of 2.491 and a differential of 0.054, while the 17lb version has an RG of 2.504 and a differential of 0.053.

Finally, the coverstock is designed for superior ball reaction on the backend by increasing the pin action. It is made from 1500 grit polish with a layer of reactive resin. The coverstock is pearlized with a high-gloss urethane; this is particularly for long-lasting durability.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What kind of ball should a straight bowler use?

A straight bowler would ideally use a ball with a low differential. A differential of 1.8 or lower would be considered straight with high end being less than .8. As mentioned earlier the ball used by a beginner would differ from a professional bowler. The beginner should use a ball with a 1.8 to 1.4 differential as opposed to the professional who would use something around .6 to .8. Professional bowlers prefer balls with high differential as they give them more spin and more advantage.

What is the best bowling ball on the market right now?

Theo was introduced to bowling the week after his birth. Just like Theo, I had also been a BPA Gold Member and bowled in local tournaments for 10 years before settling down and starting a family. It was nice to share a lot of the same experiences with my son from the very beginning. I would teach him things as we bowled together and by the time he was ready to sign up for competition himself, his teammates said his form was almost flawless. By the time he was in all-state band, he was able to bowl a 230. It was a rare high series for a full-time high school band member in high school bowlers. He has no doubt been influenced by my bowling experience when he bowls.

I loved bowling from the time I became a member of our regional Gold League until that day I left with 2 trophies in hand and my name on the high average list of the regular season.

What weight ball do most Pro Bowlers use?

Like professional bowlers, those just starting out should try a ball that’s not too heavy to start, but not too light either. Straight bowlers with a medium or lighter frame should use a ball with a 2-6 pound weight. The right ball for you can help you achieve that powerful and consistent shot needed to score well.

A coach or professional bowling store will usually be able to help you pick out the right ball for this type of bowling.

Bowling is a team sport, but you do have individual results. To feel the satisfaction of a good strike and piloting of the ball for a strike, or the disappointment of a bad shot, is all part of the fun that this game has to offer. So, what is bowling without a bowling ball? What do you need to know when shopping for a good spinning bowling ball?
